It was the largest city north of Mexico during its time and served as the political and religious center for over 10,000 people.
The site is named after the numerous mounds that were constructed by the Mississippian people, who used them for various purposes. At its peak, there were about 29 mounds at Moundville, with the largest being over 60 feet tall.
